Editor's Verdict:

On first glance LargeFriends.com's website is nowhere near as slick aesthetically as other sites we've found. When you log in there's a lot of text and surprisingly little design considering the initial appeal of the home page. It may just be because we logged in as a guest member, but all the same, the look and feel of the main site is disappointing.

We investigated the bareness of the site and looked into upgrade costs. We found a handy table telling us what you could do with a free guest account and what extra things you could do if you upgraded to Gold membership. Unfortunately Large Friends don't specify how much a Gold membership costs. There's also a tally in the chart that seems to suggest there are only 8 guest members and 27 gold members registered to the site. We could be wrong as it isn't clear exactly what the numbers are for, but either way, such a low member count or such poor clarity is not great.

When we looked into editing our profile we did find a fantastic little link that allows you to email your profile details to a friend asking them to check it over for you. Your selected friend(s) don't have to register on Large Friends to do this and we thought this was an effortless way to make sure you're using all your selling points in your profile and to check you haven't got any embarrassing typos in what you've written!

You can put a large amount of detail in your profile, including smoking and drinking habits, level of education, income and languages spoken as well as the usual basic information about your appearance and personal situation. You also specify which of these attributes you hope to find in a partner.

At the bottom of your profile page are links in red, which seem to be related to extra services, but we have to say we found this site very difficult to navigate and take in. For us it felt like we were piecing things together in an attempt to understand what to do next.

We checked out some of these extra services, which are listed in the left-hand menu and especially liked the design and layout of the email and wink section. You can save your emails too in a separate folder and keep all your communications in order by adding, deleting and renaming folders.

We browsed around the forum and there seemed to be a very friendly atmosphere. Topics seemed relevant and genuine and included messages such as 'To wait or not to wait', 'How can I tell if it's real?' and 'Confidence'. The forum also seems to be active on a daily basis, giving the impression you can find many friends in this forum, if not someone extra special.

There's also an Earn Gold Bonus section to the main site that encourages members to recommend Large Friends, write quality blogs and report spammers amongst other things. It could be seen as a community idea, involving members in the running of the site, but it's not particularly well put across.

Large Friends is a bit of a clumsy site really, it does what it needs to do, but it's not nicely packaged or delivered. However, search results are listed well and photos of members are large, although they're not always bright enough or close-up. Each profile has a tag line attached to it, so you can instantly see if this might be the match for you.
